Background of the Study
Market unions have long been a vital component of the social and economic fabric of local communities in Nigeria. In regions like Gashua LGA, where trade is a primary means of livelihood, market unions play a significant role in regulating trade activities and ensuring harmony among vendors. These unions are responsible for setting up market regulations, resolving disputes between traders, and sometimes acting as mediators in larger community conflicts.
In Gashua, local market unions have proven essential in managing conflicts arising from disputes over resources, market space, and sometimes, ethnic or religious tensions between different groups of traders. Market unions help to maintain order and peace in the marketplace by resolving conflicts amicably without the need for external intervention (Aliyu & Nasir, 2023). However, the extent to which these unions contribute to broader conflict resolution in Gashua, especially in the face of regional and ethnic tensions, remains under-explored. This study aims to examine the role of market unions in mitigating conflicts within the community and evaluate their influence on broader peacebuilding initiatives.
Statement of the Problem
Despite the significance of market unions in managing conflicts within marketplaces, their role in broader community conflict resolution in Gashua has not been fully understood. Conflicts related to trade, particularly between ethnic or religious groups, can escalate quickly, and the role of market unions in preventing such escalation needs closer examination. Additionally, the capacity of market unions to address issues beyond trade-related conflicts, such as inter-ethnic disputes, has not been well explored. This study seeks to bridge this gap by assessing how market unions in Gashua contribute to both trade-related and community-wide conflict resolution.

Scope and Limitations of the Study
This study will focus on market unions in Gashua LGA . Limitations may include challenges in accessing data from union leaders and traders due to community sensitivities and possible biases in their accounts of conflict resolution.
